Sharing is Caring
Two weeks ago I was Skyping with my mom and my 2 year old was sitting beside me playing with some loose change. He’s never put money in his mouth before and has been mesmorized by it, so I never really stressed out about it. Obviously I didn’t let him just run around with money in his hands, but he was sitting right beside me so I just went about my conversation. My mom went on and on about how I shouldn’t let him play with it. “Don’t you remember your sister swallowing that penny?!” Yeah mom, but Noah doesn’t put money in his mouth.
Moms are always right.
Flash forward 2 weeks. Friday night Phil and Noah were building forts out of the couch cushions in the living room. Noah apparently found a nickel in the couch while he was taking the couch cushions off. We had no idea that he had put it in his mouth…until Phil laid him down on the ground to change his diaper. When he laid him down the nickel went down Noah’s throat and he started choking on it. Phil flipped him over and was doing back thrusts to try to get it to come up (meanwhile I’m running around the living room screaming, “HELP HIM, HELP HIM!” totally being unhelpful myself). The back thrusts weren’t working so Phil flipped him back over and tried to use the hook finger to scoop it out, but it was too far down to hook. He inadvertently pushed the nickel down his throat and Noah swallowed it. Better than suffocating on it…but still scary! I called the on-call pedi and they told me that as long as I was 100% it wasn’t a battery and as long as it was less than an inch in diameter that we could wait. If he had trouble breathing, couldn’t swallow water and plain white bread, or had stomach pain then we should take him to the ER immediately. If it hadn’t passed within 3 days we were supposed to call the pediatrician.

Enter: Monday. Still no nickel. I called the pedi and they sent orders for Noah to go get an x-ray to see where the nickel was. They told me I could wait 1 more day to see if it showed up, which I did, and it didn’t. So today we ventured off to take pictures of Noah’s tummy and find the money he ate :) It was the easiest, most painless x-ray ever. He walked right into the room with the xray techs and I could hear him giggling the entire time. (Huge weight off of my guilty shoulders). The x-ray techs let me come look at the x-ray and sure enough, big ole nickel right in his belly! Here’s a sneak peak for you 😉
His doctor called and told us that it looks like it’s in his large intestine, which is a good thing. She said the big “danger zone” is the move from the esophogus to the stomach, and the nickel made it through there. It still has the possibility of getting stuck of perforating, but she said that is incredibly rare. She said it could take 3-6  days or up to 4 weeks to come out! We’re going to re-xray next week if it hasn’t appeared yet.
There you have it folks. Kids are exhausting :)
